My crape myrtles have sooty mold on the branches, what do I need to spray to stop it? This is not a fungus problem but the result of an insect from last year so spraying fungicides will not help nor will applying dormant oil. This is the crape myrtle bark scale insect that has sadly infested the Fort Smith and surrounding areas but there is hope. Wait until the leaf buds begin to swell to indicate the plant is coming out of dormancy and apply Bayer Tree and Shrub drench or Fertilome drench, mix in a bucket and pour around the base. Both contain Imicloprid which is the recommended systemic insecticide for this insect and when applied properly will be almost 100% effective. The crapes are not dying and should not be removed they just look really bad, the black mold can be removed with a brush and soapy water or very carefully using a light touch with a pressure washer if left alone it will wear off. The crape will bloom as usual. Also, on crapes pruning should be done this week or the next to shape them for the spring, please do not top crape myrtles this is a bad practice that ruins the look of the beautiful bush or tree and can never be corrected. Spring is here are you ready? Til next time, Vicki
