Spring is just around the corner are you ready? Mother Nature will be waking up the soil soon for seeds, trees, shrubs and plants. It’s time to finish those winter chores such as applying dormant spray on fruit trees and ornamental trees and shrubs. Finish working in compost, sphagnum peat, blood meal and bone meal in flowerbeds giving time to begin breaking down and are ready when plants are available. Put in any new flowerbeds now, our Mulch and More has bulk soils that make creating a new bed easy just add sphagnum peat to the mix and it is ready to go. Checking your soil with a soil test or a PH probe and when needed applying high calcium lime to gardens now will help with blossom end rot on many vegetables and dolomitic lime will assure your lawn be able to process all fertilizers. Finish trimming shade trees while they are still dormant but please do not top; wait to trim Bradford pears, redbuds and any other early blooming trees until after they bloom. Crape myrtles and roses should not be trimmed until late February and early March pruning stimulates them and you don’t want them to wake up too early and be damaged by late frosts. For container gardening begin assembling and cleaning your pots check for cracks. Preparation in gardening is key, anything you can do early puts you just that much ahead for spring. Gardening is fun and relaxing now is the time to sit back and decide what you want to grow this year. Till next time, Vicki
